APA 7th Citation Guide

A guide on APA Style 7th edition, derived from the APA Style Manual

General guidelines for citing webpages & websites

General Guidelines
  • Author element: All websites and web pages have an author. If you cannot find the name/s of people who have written the webpage, then cite the group author (the organization). Look for a logo, usually in the top left-hand corner, or click on the "About Us" link.

  • Date element:Provide the date of the webpage, not the copyright date, and not the "last reviewed by" date. If there is a "last updated" date on the page, use that if it applies to the content that you are citing.
    • Provide as much of the date as is evident - up to the year, month, and day.
    • If there is no date evident, then cite it as a no date, i.e. (n.d.)
    • If you can approximate the date, e.g. no date is marked, but the webpage title is  "Top cities to travel to in 2019", so you assume the content was inputted in 2019, then use the abbreviation "ca." e.g. (ca. 2019)
    • If the webpage is designed to change over time and won't be archived, see the next point on retrieval information.

  • Title element:
    • Webpage or website title: Post title in sentence case in italics.
  • Source element:
    • Website webpage belongs to: In Title Case e.g., Cleveland Clinic.
    • If the website title is the same as the group author, then omit the title.
    • URL: Insert the URL after the source title in the format of http://xxxxx
    • Only include a retrieval date if the webpage is designed to change over time and it won't be archived.
