APA 7th Citation Guide

A guide on APA Style 7th edition, derived from the APA Style Manual

General guidelines for citing eJournal articles

General Guidelines

Author element
  • Author: List up to 20 authors. Follow guidelines for 21+ authors.

Date element

  • Date: Write the publication year of the journal article in parentheses, e.g. (2020).
  • Seasons in dates: If a journal or magazine is published by season and does not include a volume or issue number, include the season with the date in parentheses, e.g. (2019, Summer).
Title element
  • Journal article title: Write the title of the journal article in regular font emphasis and in sentence case.
  • To write in sentence case is to write how one writes a sentence, i.e. the first word starts with a capital letter, and the rest is in lower case, except for proper nouns, abbreviations, and acronyms. Also, begin subheadings with a capital letter. For more info on sentence case, see the link below.

Source element

  • Journal title: The title of the journal is in italics and in Title Case. For example, Educational Leadership and Administration: Teaching and Program Development. For more information on title case, see the link below.
  • Volume, issue & page numbers: Provide the volume, issue, and page range if evident. If any of this information is missing omit it from the reference.
  • Electronic retrieval info: DOIs vs URLs
    • Default preference - provide the DOI: If the article has a DOI include it at the end of the reference. The DOI is a digital object identifier - a string of numbers, currently beginning with the number 10, e.g. 10.1177/0027432118816147.
      • Prefix the DOI with: https://doi.org/
      • The DOI is typically located on the first page of the eJournal article in the header or the footer. You may also find it in the database record details for the article.
      • If the article is from a library database and has no DOI, then you typically do not put online retrieval information. Treat it as if it is a print journal article, ending the reference at the final page number. There are a few exceptions to this rule, detailed for particular situations in the APA Manual.

eJournal articles - with DOIs

Specific guidelines
  • Prefix the DOI with https://doi.org/
  • Follow the prefix with the original DOI string. Find the original DOI string in the full record in a database, or on the first page of the article.
  • If you copy the DOI from a generated citation from GALILEO or an individual database, then double-check that the prefix is formatted correctly according to APA 7th, and make any edits if needed.

Warning about DOIs in GALILEO Cite Feature

If you generate a citation from GALILEO, the DOI may be formatted incorrectly. Always double check!

It may be formatted as https://doi-org.ezyproxy.augusta.edu/10.1...

In that case, you will need to:

  1. Change the hyphen between doi and org to a period, i.e. change https://doi-org to https://doi.org.
  2. Delete the ezproxy.augusta.edu part out of the DOI.
