APA 7th Citation Guide

A guide on APA Style 7th edition, derived from the APA Style Manual

YouTube or other streaming video

General Guidelines

  • Author element
    • Credit the person or group who uploaded the video as the author, even if they did not create the work.

    • If an author introduces themselves in the video, include their name in the reference entry too, and use their name for the in-text citation. See how to do this in the "YouTube, etc. - personal author with group author username" box.

  • Date element
    • Specific date: Write the specific date the video was uploaded, i.e. (Year, Month, Day)
  • Title element
    • Video title: Write the title of the video in italics and in sentence case. Include [Video] before the end of the period.
  • Source element
    • Video platform title: Write the video platform title in regular font and how you see it displayed, but start it with a capital letter, e.g. YouTube; Vimeo.
  • Finding information about the video
    • On YouTube, the video metadata, i.e., the title, who uploaded it, and the date it was uploaded, is under the video.
    • On other platforms, the video metadata may not be as obvious and is 'hidden' somewhere on the page. Look for an 'info' button to see if there is more info.
    • If you aren't sure if you've found all the information there is, Ask a Librarian!
