APA 7th Citation Guide

A guide on APA Style 7th edition, derived from the APA Style Manual

Referencing Style Web Pages

Using Citation Generators

Citation generators can help you get started in creating your references and reference page.  While these tools can be helpful, keep in mind that they are not error-free and there is no substitute for closely reviewing your citations.  Be sure to refer to the APA guide or other APA approved resources to verify your references.

You may come across two different kinds of citations generators:

  • Database citation tools:  these are generators native to library databases.  You'll see these in PubMed, GALIELO, and most other AU library databases.  They can automatically generate citations for indexed resources using the data included in an item record. Any errors in the database will result in inaccurate citations, so double-check the result.
  • Third-party citation generators: these are generators developed by companies outside of databases.  These generators will create citations based on the data you input into them.  Any errors in your own entry will result in inaccurate citations, so enter carefully and double-check the result.  Consider the citation generators below to get started:
    • ZoteroBib generates in many styles and allows you to save your bibliography online.  Allows you to generate from just an URL, DOI, ISBN, arXi ID, PMID, or the item's title.
    • Citation Builder from North Carolina State University generates in APA, MLA, Chicago, and CSE/CBE.
    • EndNote, a downloadable program (provided by AU) which offers comprehensive referencing tools in a number of styles.
    • If you must, EasyBibBibMe, and Citation Machine (all owned by Chegg) offer citations creation services in multiple styles, with pay options for more features.
