APA 7th Citation Guide

A guide on APA Style 7th edition, derived from the APA Style Manual

General guidelines for citing reports

Author Element
  • Use the most specific government agency for the group author or publisher: You may find several layers of government agencies listed as the group author. Use the most specific agency as the author in the reference, e.g. use National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, not U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
  • If multiple agencies jointly authored a report, connect the names with an ampersand, i.e. an &, followed by commas to separate the names of three or more agencies

Date Element

  • Provide the year of publication, month, and day if available.
  • If only the year of publication is available (quite common), then just provide the year.

Title Element

  • Provide the report or publication no. if available: If there is a report or publication number, provide that after the title. If the report:
    • Specifies the type of report it is, then provide that info, e.g. (NIH Publication No. 18-2424).
    • Does not specify, then simply note the report no., e.g. (Report No. 125).
  • Ensure your punctuation is correct:
    • Report title: Write the title of the report in sentence case and in italics.
    • Report numbers, if applicable: Report numbers are in parentheses and in title case, i.e. each word is capitalized, e.g. (Report No. 125); (NIH Publication No. 18-2424).

Source Element

  • If the publisher is the same as the author: Omit the publisher.
  • Insert the stable URL to the report itself - not to the database link - after the report title: For example, if the report is a PDF document you found on the web, then provide a stable URL to the PDF. If you found the report in a library database, do not include the URL to the database record.
