Intro: Creating stand-alone bibliographies

Why create a stand-alone bibliograpy?

If you do not need to use in-text citations or footnotes, it is often easiest to create a stand-alone bibliography, works cited, or references list. There are a few different ways to create a stand-alone bibliography using EndNote. 

This page outlines methods below to provide a quick and easy way to create a bibliography, works cited, or references list.

However, if you wish to create in-text citations or footnotes as well as your bibliography, you will need to use the EndNote Plug-In (also known as "Cite While You Write (CWYW)" feature.

Export method

To export your bibliography / reference list follow these steps:

  1. Select the Output Style you wish to use for your bibliography, e.g. APA, Chicago, etc.
  2. Select the references you wish to include in your bibliography. Hold down the CTRL button to select multiple references.
  3. Select File > Export... a dialog box will open. Select the following options:
    • Where you want to save the file
    • The file type - text, RTF (Word compatible) or HTML (web page)
    • The Output Style
    • Ensure that Export Selected References is selected
  4. Click Save and your bibliography is created as a new file. Note the XML format will not print in your selected style, but XML.

Copy Formatted/Paste method

To use the copy formatted/paste method, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Output Style you wish to use for your bibliography, e.g. APA, Chicago, etc. 
  2. Select the references you wish to include in your bibliography.
  3. Select References/Show Selected References.
  4. Sort your references so they appear in your desired order. 
  5. Go to References Menu and select Copy Formatted Reference.
  6. Open your document.
  7. Right-click and select Paste, or Ctrl-V or Edit > Paste.

Subject Bibliography method

Opt for this method to select references from your EndNote library based on one or more fields in your references. You can list references multiple times by keyword, author, or any other field that you desire.

To select references from your EndNote library based on one or more fields in your references, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Output Style you wish to use for your bibliography, e.g. APA, Chicago, etc.
  2. Go to Tools/Subject Bibliography.
  3. Select the field(s) which you would like to use as criteria for your bibliography, e..g. author or journal. 
  4. Select the record(s) you would like to have in your bibliography.
  5. Click "OK" to create your bibliography.
  6. Select Layout to modify how your bibliography will display.
  7. Choose Save to save as a text file, RTF file (Word compatible), or HTML (web page). You also have the option to print without saving the file.
