Are you using the Edit & Manage Citations in the EndNote tab?
Always use Edit & Manage Citations in the EndNote tab rather than the editing references directly using the delete key on the keyboard.
If you just use the backspace or highlight and hit the delete key, the in-text citation will appear again whenever you insert a new reference or update your bibliography.
This will ensure that the changes you make are saved.
Place the cursor just prior to the closing parentheses of the first reference and adding the next in-text citation.
Word will then merge these together, so you will have an in-text citation of multiple references.
You can change the order by clicking on Edit & Manage Citations and using the up and down arrows.
To insert a special character into EndNote copy and paste the character from a Word document.
Alternatively, use the Character Map tool:
Instant Formatting should be turned on (in the drop down menu on the right of the toolbar)
If Word is crashing, deleted items are reappearing, or bibliographies are displaying more than once then you may have residual EndNote field codes in your document.
Residual field codes can occur if you do not delete EndNote references correctly in your Word document.
To correctly edit/delete references, use Edit & Manage Citations> Remove Citation in the EndNote tab instead of the Delete key.
To remove residual EndNote field codes, firstly make a back-up copy of your document, then in Word in the EndNote tab and select Convert Citations & Bibliography > Convert to Unformatted Citations.
Then, highlight all text (Ctrl+A). To remove any additional hidden field codes click on (Ctrl+6). Press (Ctrl+C) to copy the highlighted text and open a new Word document and press (Ctrl+V) to paste. In your new document, in the EndNote tab, select Update Citations & Bibliography. Your document will be reformatted in your chosen style.
When working on a large Word document (such as a dissertation or thesis) Word can become slow when inserting/editing EndNote citations. You can try the following to speed things up.
Firstly make a backup copy of your document. Then try:
References will be unformatted appearing as {author#number}) and no reference list will appear.
New EndNote references will be inserted in this unformatted style but will insert more quickly. Once you have finished working on your document you can reformat it. With your EndNote library open, select your desired reference style, and select Update Citations & Bibliography. Your in-text references will be reformatted and your reference list will be displayed.
