Solutions to occasional EndNote desktop issues

I misplaced the Product Key, which I need for installing EndNote desktop:

The Product Key is in the file in BOX page where you downloaded EndNote.

To retrieve it again, go to the EndNote BOX page to the Installation instructions.

The citation I exported from a database has missing authors. How do I enter additional multiple authors?

Each author must be entered on a separate line within the Author field.

Use the Enter/Return key to start a new line and add additional authors. For example:

Morgan, P.
Wilmhurst, H.

The 'Find Full Text' feature did not work for some of my citations. How can I include a PDF of the source to my reference?

If you want to add a PDF saved on your computer to a reference in your EndNote library then drag the icon of the saved PDF and drop it onto that reference in the library. This also works with other file types.

Alternatively, right-click on the reference you want to attach the file and go to File Attachments >Attach File > Select fileOpen
A paperclip symbol appears next to each reference with an attached file.

I need to use a filter to import references from a particular database.
How do I find the appropriate filter?

Common filters are available from within EndNote desktop, under Output Styles.

Additional filters are available on the EndNote website.

I need to use a connection file. How do I find the appropriate connection file?

The EndNote website includes a full list of connection files. Follow these steps to download and install connection files:

  1. Search and download the selected connection file from the table.
  2.  Double-click the connection file to open in EndNote.
  3. In EndNote select File Menu and choose Save as. Remove the word copy and click Save.
  4.  Click on File Menu and choose Close Connection.

Thomson Scientific has some instructions for solving problems with the EndNote toolbar and various versions of Word available in a Knowledge Base article.

Method 1: Re-enable CWYW in Word:
  1. Open Word. Go to File > Options > Add-ins
  2. Click on the drop-down arrow at the bottom of the screen to Manage Disabled Items and select Go.
  3. Highlight any EndNote or CWYW add-ins and click on Enable > OK.
  4. Close and open Word again and the EndNote tab should display.
  5. If the tools still do not appear then go to your Control Panel > Programs and Features
  6. Browse and select EndNote X8 and then click Repair, or choose Change then select Repair. If an additional dialog appears, select Next Next on each of these screens until the process finishes.
  7. Close and restart all Office applications and check for the tools in Word.

Method 2: Re-enable via EndNote X8 Program Files Folder
  1. Browse to the EndNote X8 Program Files folder and run the Configure EndNote.exe utility.
  2. Make sure Configure EndNote components is selected and click Next.
  3. Select Cite While You Write add-in for Microsoft Office > Next >  Finish.
    • Note: The message may read that the Configuration was canceled. Ignore that message.
  4. Open Word and look for the EndNote tools tab in the ribbon.
