EndNote 20 for Windows

Step-by-step guidance on using the most popular functions of EndNote 20 on PC

Intro: Manually enter references

There may be times when you will need to add references manually. You would do this for works that you cannot find in GALILEO, individual databases, or Google Scholar. Most often, these would be works outside of the scholarly literature, for example, webpages, blog posts, YouTube videos, online news articles, and more. This page explains how to do so.

Watch or read: Create a new reference manually

To add a new reference to an open library:

  1. From the References menu, select New Reference (alternatively, select Command or Ctrl+N). This opens an empty Reference window.
  1. Select a reference type from the Reference Type list at the top of the window, e.g. Web page.
  1. Enter bibliographic data into each of the fields in the reference.
    • Tip! If you know you will only be citing the source in one particular reference style, only enter bibliographic data into the fields that reference style requires.
  1. Close the reference to save it or select File > Save and add it to the library.
