Intro: Set up Reference Type & Style preferences

If your desired reference style is unavailable in EndNote, you may be able to find, download and import it from the EndNote website - Output Styles section. This page has instructions for how to set up a reference type and style, including how to download and import additional styles.

Set Up Reference Type & Style Preferences

The default Reference Type in EndNote should be Journal Article. To reset, or set a different default:

  1. Go to Edit > Preferences

     

  2. Select Reference Type > Select a default reference type, e.g. Journal Article

     

  3. Select OK.

​​​Choose a style from the Output Style Box and select. If your style is not listed then:

  1. Choose Select Another Style which will open a dialog box.

  2. Scroll down, or search for, the name of your required style eg APA 6th.

  3. Select Choose and close the dialog box.​

You can choose more than one Reference Style to populate the drop-down Output Style box:

  1. Go to Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager
  2. Place a tick next to each of the styles you want to appear eg APA 6th, Harvard, Vancouver.
  3. Close the dialog box. These new styles will now all appear in the Output Style box.

Quick Steps: Go to EndNote Output Styles  > Find correct style > Download > Open file (should launch in EndNote) > File > Save As (remove the word 'copy') > Close.

Step-By-Step:

  1. In EndNote go to the Style Manager box > select Get More on the Web. Alternatively, visit EndNote Output Styles.

     

  2. Select or search for the required style. Sometimes there are multiple variations of the same style, so ensure you select the correct one.

     

  3. Select Download. 

     

  4. EndNote should open. Go to File > Save As to save the file. Remove the word "copy" from the end of the name.

     

  5. You can then close the Style window after saving. To close the Style Window, select the gray x in the top right corner.

     

  6. The style should now be in the appropriate folder on your computer (usually in Documents > Endnote > Styles)

     

  7. When you want to use the style, go to your library, in the style box click on Select another Style... select the Style and select Choose.

Q. I can't find my required style, what can I do?

A. Additional styles are available for download from the EndNote website - EndNote Output Styles section

Search for your required style. Follow the prompts to download and import the style into your EndNote desktop.
