EndNote X9 for Windows: Export directly from other databases - including PubMed

Step-by-step Guidance on using EndNote on PC

Intro: Export citations directly from online databases

In most databases, you can directly export selected references into your EndNote Library. This page provides a general overview on exporting from other databases and two examples.

How to direct export from different databases

How to directly export varies from database to database, but typically you would:

  1. Conduct a search in your desired database.
  2. Select the records you wish to export > Select 'Export' or 'Save' > Follow the prompts to export the records into EndNote.

Depending on the database, you can directly export single records into your EndNote Library or select and export multiple records.

Typical process for direct export of multiple records in a database:

  1. Select the records you wish to export. Go to your temporary list of selected items. They may be in a 'Marked Items' section or a temporary folder.

  2. Select the items you wish to export. Often, you can 'Select All' to select all items in your temporary list.

  3. Follow the prompts on your browser to export the records into EndNote.

  4. The records should now appear in the 'Imported References' folder of your EndNote Library.
  • Tip! If you have the time, check your references now for any errors and edit if necessary.
