According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, "Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions."

Below are some resources that can help improve health literacy.

  • Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion: Quick Guide to Health Literacy
  • National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM): Health Literacy
  • MedlinePlus "MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health's Web site for patients and their families and friends. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, the world’s largest medical library, it brings you information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in language you can understand. MedlinePlus offers reliable, up-to-date health information, anytime, anywhere, for free."
  • Health Literacy Consulting
  • Plain Language Medical Dictionary "The Plain Language Medical Dictionary widget is a project of the University of Michigan Taubman Health Sciences Library as part of the Michigan Health Literacy Awareness project."
  • "Ask Me 3 is a patient education program designed to improve communication between patients and health care providers, encourage patients to become active members of their health care team, and promote improved health outcomes. The program encourages patients to ask their health care providers three questions:
    1. What is my main problem?
    2. What do I need to do?
    3. Why is it important for me to do this?"
