| Title: | North Augusta Bridge After 1908 Flood (Augusta, GA) | |||
| Creator: | Unknown | |||
| Subject: | Augusta (GA) Bridges History (Augusta, GA) |
		|||
| Description: | This bridge between 13th street of Augusta, Georgia and North Augusta, South Carolina was the major trade route and only bridge between the two communities over the Savannah River. Flood waters during the August 26-27 flood washed out the first span as pictured. The photograph is inscribed with the date 26 August 1908 which commemorates the day the flood waters began their precipitous rise. This image was likely taken after 1 September though as the river is back in its normal banks and the approach is not too muddy. The ladder arrangement is likely what was referred to in the 3 Jan 1909 Augusta Chronicle as the "Toll Stair" that some unnamed individual had constructed to permit pedestrians access to cross the bridge for a fee. This postcard was glued into a scrap book at some point in time. The publisher data on the address side is obliterated. 13.5 X 8.5 cm B&W Post Card torn |
