| Description: | Located at 519 Greene Street, this house was built in 1832 or 1835 (sources disagree) as a family residence for John Phinizy. It is considered a transitional style between the Federal Style and the Greek Revival, with elements of both. The top floor and a porch on the west side were added some time between 1885 and 1926. The building was owned by the Phinizy family until 1933, at which time it was sold. Since then it has served for a short while as the home of Poteet Funeral Home and for almost 60 years as the BPO Elks Lodge 205. In 1993 it was purchased by William G. Hatcher, Sr. and MAU Inc. and is now called “The Marion Hatcher Center” and is used as a reception hall. The porches on the west side of the building were replaced by a 2 story wing containing two large ballrooms in the 1940s. From the content of the photograph, the date is before 1933 and probably in the 1920s, though the house was in this basic configuration from some time after the 1885 renovations to its sale in 1933.
