Teaching Primary & Secondary Sources in K-12 - Open Resources: Home

This was designed to be a complementary resource for the 'Teaching with Primary Sources' workshop run by Dr. Juan Walker. But it can also be used as a stand-alone resource to aid you in your preparation for teaching with primary sources!

How we Selected the Web Resources

Web Search Overload

With an abundance of free teaching resources on the web, it can be time-consuming and confusing to find a suitable web resource for your teaching need.

We evaluated the web resources for credibility, so you don't have to.

We used the 5Ws & H model for source evaluation, a model you can teach your students to use for evaluating information they find before they use it:

  • Who: Authoritative creators.
  • What:  Quality content.
  • When: Current, or at least up-to-date enough to suit the need.
  • Where: From an authoritative source.
  • Why: Purpose relates to need.
  • How: Evidence of thoughtful creation.

About this Guide

A collaboration between Dr. Juan Walker and the Liaison Librarian for the Department of Teaching & Leading, this Library Guide was designed to complement the Teaching with Primary Sources Workshop.

However, it can easily be used as a stand-alone resource to aid in your teaching preparation.

It is packed with open (free) web resources to help teacher candidates and teachers prepare lessons for different social studies subjects, utilizing primary and secondary resources.

Find top quality, free curriculum units and lesson plans related to primary resources, supporting resources from digital collections to other multimedia to printables, background information for yourself, and online activities and games your students will enjoy while learning.
