ORCiD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID)

This guide gives an overview of ORCID, how to populate your ORCID profile, and instructions for integrating your ORCID iD with various systems.

What is ORCiD?

Think of ORCiD as a social security number for researchers -- it's a 16-digit number unique to you and to you alone!

 

  • resolves name ambiguity issues, which improves recognition for you and your research/scholarship
  • improves discoverability, as ORCiD associates your identity to your research outputs
  • reduces manual data input, as ORCiD can integrate with multiple systems

 

How do I register for ORCiD?

  1. Visit https://orcid.org/register to get started.
  2. You will be prompted to add education, employment, invited positions and distinctions, and membership and service.  

                                                          

  

  • You can designate viewer permissions to everyone, trusted parties, or only you. 

                                                                        

How do I populate ORCiD with my research/scholarship?

You can import records of your research by connecting with abstract and index databases. Currently, ORCID has sharing capabilities with the following:

  • Airiti
  • Australian National Data Service (ANDS) Registry
  • BASE - Bielefeld Academic Search Engine
  • CrossRef Metadata Search
  • DataCite
  • Europe PubMed Central (U.S. NCBI is included here)
  • ISNI
  • KoreaMed
  • MLA International Bibliography
  • Redalyc
  • ResearcherID
  • Scopus 

 

1. To connect with another system, click on add works, then click search & link.    

 

 

2. Then, select database/index from the dropdown list that appears. 

 

3. After selecting a system, you will be prompted to grant permission to that system in order to link your research. 

 

You will then be prompted to search, select, and import research available in your selected system.

To manually enter research, click on add works, then click add manually.    

Add information as needed, then click add to list at the bottom of the page.

To add funding information, click on the “+ Add funding” tab, then click on the “Search & link” tab or the “+ Add mannually” tab.

Search & Link tab: You can search by your name or grant title.

How can I designate other users to make changes to my ORCiD on my behalf?

1. Once signed in, click on your name in the upper right corner, and select Trusted Parties:
