Reproduction of Materials in Historical Collections and Archives

NOTICE - Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Reproduction of Materials in Historical Collections and Archives

  • Reproductions of Historical Collections and Archives material may be done at the discretion of the curator of the Greenblatt Library’s HCA and in accordance with copyright law and other legal restrictions.
  • Reproduction is a privilege and not a service automatically rendered. Permission may be based on the physical condition of the item, the number of items requested, the intended use of the item and other factors. The curator will balance the needs of the researcher with the preservation of the collection.
  • The curator will determine the method of reproduction (e.g. photocopy, scanning, photography, etc.). All reproduction will be done by the staff of the Historical Collections and Archives.
  • Reproduction services are provided for a fee. See the "Fees for Reproductions" box or page 2 on the Reproduction Request Form for list of fees.
  • Copying of the majority or entire folders, books, manuscripts, oral histories, photographs, audiovisuals, etc. may not be done. In the rare case of extensive copying or use other than individual research, copies produced for a recipient may be required to be returned to the Historical Collections when his/her research project has been completed.
  • The Reproduction Request Form must be completed and returned to HCA before any reproduction of material takes place. Permission to reproduce does not constitute permission to publish.

Publication of Materials from Historical Collections and Archives

  • Permission to publish in any form requires written permission from the Augusta University and permission from the owner of the copyright.

  • Approval to publish authorizes publication only in a single new work, in a single language, and in a single format. Such authorization is not exclusive and the Augusta University does not surrender its own right to publish or grant others permission to do so.

  • A copy of the publication for which permission to publish has been granted shall be provided to the Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library.

  • A publication fee is assessed for nonprofit and commercial publications.

  • Credit shall be given as follows: Historical Collections and Archives, Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library, Augusta University
