In this class we will:

  • Learn about the research process as it relates to the scientific literature
  • Utilize search tools & techniques to conduct efficient and effective searches
  • Distinguish between plagiarism and the appropriate use of others’ research in their work
  • Explain the importance of bibliographic accuracy and utilize APA 7 format & citation style

Use our Microsoft Teams channel to upload your assignments or post questions and discussions with your classmates and instructors. This is where we meet each week as well.

  • Types of information & where to look for it
  • Assignment 1 – "Health in the Headlines" - due 6/15 in our Teams Assignments tab 
    Find a news story that reports on a medical study or health-related research.
    1. List the title of the article, date, author(s), and where you found it (Yahoo News, Augusta Chronicle, etc.). Be sure to include a link to the article (you'll need this next week!).
    2. What interested you about the headline that made you choose it?
    3. Read the article and summarize it in a few sentences: Tell us the "who, what, when, where, & why".
    4. Upload your document in the Assignment 1 space on our Teams channel by midnight on Wednesday June 15th.

    • Finding the study behind the headline (see links below)
  • Assignment 2 - "From health in the headlines to the original study: How do they compare?" - due 6/22 in Teams Assignments tab.
  1. Use PubMed to find the the study reported on in your health news article.
     
  2. Include the study's article citation in AMA or APA format.
     
  3. Answer the following questions in a few sentences: (Hint: Revisit the questions under #3 on page 3 of "How to read a research article" below to guide your response.): 
  • Did the news article make it easy or difficult to find the actual study? Describe how you got to the full text of the study (not just the abstract/summary).
  • What kind of study was it? What question were researchers they trying to answer, and what were their results (briefly)?
  • Is the news report an accurate representation of the study? What did the news writer do well? What could be improved upon in their report?

 

Here are a couple of the databases we will be looking at to find medical and health research:

Text Mining Research - NCBI - NLMPubMed is a search interface comprising citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites.

 

An Introduction to Using CINAHL What is CINAHL? How do I access CINAHL?CINHAL Plus with Full Text is the premier database for nursing and allied health, including nursing, biomedicine, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines.

    • Write down the name of the condition we give you.
    • Using PubMed, find:
      • Scientific and common name, alternate spellings, synonyms, acronyms, abbreviations, MeSH terms, etc.

Prepare and deliver a 5 minute PowerPoint/slideshow presentation on an assigned genetic disease & recommended treatment(s).
What is it? (brief definition/background/history)
What causes it? (genetics/patho)
Body system affected (effects/patho)
Recommended treatment/s (poss. pharma) & prognosis
You must use three sources, formatted in APA 7th ed. style, cited on your final slide. Start with the SEEP LibGuide:
1 textbook chapter/section
1 journal article
1 source of your choice – may include one credible website. Or you may choose another journal article or book section.

Congratulations on making it through the course! Your hard work has paid off. Today you will make your 5 minute presentations to the class, and then we will see how much you have learned from this course with a Post-Test.
