Publishing Research

This guide offers assistance in where to publish research as well as how to publish, such as through open access.

Creative Commons offers copyright licenses for creators to give permissions to share and use their work by others. Creators can choose from a variety of licenses types, which are presented below.

Creative Commons Licensing Types

 

   

 

Attribution (CC BY)                                        

 

Must: Credit the original work

Allowances: distribute, remix, tweak, build upon work, even for commercial purposes​ 

  • This is the most accommodating of licenses offered. 
  • Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.

   

Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA)              

 

Must: Credit the original work and license new creation under identical terms

Allowances: remix, tweak, build upon work, even for commercial purposes 

  • Recommended for materials that would benefit from incorporating content from Wikipedia and similarly licensed projects 

    

Attribution-NoDerivs (CC BY-ND)                                                                  

Must: Credit the original work 

Allowances: reuse the work for any purpose, including for commercial purposes 

Not permitted: cannot be adapted or modified and shared with others

Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC)

 

Must: Credit the original work 

Allowances: remix, tweak, build upon the work 

Not permitted: re-use for commercial purposes

  • This is the most restrictive of licenses offered.

 Attribution

All CC licenses require that others who use your work in any way must give you credit the way you request, but not in a way that suggests you endorse them or their use. If they want to use your work without giving you credit or for endorsement purposes, they must get your permission first.


CC Share Alike

 Share Alike

You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and modify your work, as long as they distribute any modified work on the same terms. If they want to distribute modified works under other terms, they must get your permission first.


CC No Derivs

 No Derivs (Derivatives)

You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only original copies of your work. If they want to modify your work, they must get your permission first.


CC NonCommercial

 Non Commercial

You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and (unless you have chosen NoDerivs) modify and use your work for any purpose other than commercially unless they get your permission first.
