Getting started with your Thesis/Dissertation

Resources for students and faculty advisors who are beginning the thesis/dissertation process:

The Thesis/Dissertation Template

Students are required to adhere to the formatting set forth by The Graduate School and AU Libraries. These formatting guidelines are detailed in the Thesis/Dissertation Preparation Booklet. AU Libraries also provides templates that students can use:

Tips and Tricks for Using the ETD Templates

Obtaining Copyright Permissions for Re-Using Previously Published Works

You should obtain copyright permissions if you are:

  • re-using previously-published first-authored works in the alternative ETD template
  • re-using any figure, table, illustration, etc. in your thesis/dissertation from a previously-published work

Most requests are now done online through RightsLink. Click here for a tutorial that demonstrates the steps for requesting permissions through RightsLink.

Submitting the Thesis/Dissertation

Once you have successfully defended your thesis/dissertation and have completed any revisions requested by your committee, you are ready to submit your thesis/dissertation!

1. Complete the Approval to Publish ETD Form and submit this form with your thesis/dissertation file to TGSenrolled@augusta.edu.

2. Submit thesis/dissertation file to ProQuest Dissertations & Theses database.

There are several options for submitting your thesis/dissertation:

  • Traditional ProQuest Publishing with no embargo and Open Access through Scholarly Commons

What does this mean? Your full-text ETD will be available in ProQuest to those who subscribe to the ProQuest ETD database, and your full-text ETD will be available to anyone across the internet through Scholarly Commons.

  • Traditional ProQuest Publishing with an embargo and embargo through Scholarly Commons

What does this mean? Your full-text ETD will not be available in ProQuest or in Scholarly Commons until your embargo (also known as a restriction period) expires. After your embargo expires, your full-text ETD will become available in ProQuest to those who subscribe to the ProQuest ETD database, and your full-text ETD will become available to anyone across the internet through Scholarly Commons. Student can choose an embargo of any length (e.g., 6 months, 2 years, or 30 years). If student is planning to publish ETD or parts of the ETD in a peer-review journal or as a book, I recommend placing an embargo for at least 3 years.

  • Traditional ProQuest Publishing and AU-Only through Scholarly Commons

What does this mean? Your full-text ETD will be available in ProQuest to those who subscribe to the ProQuest ETDdatabase, and your full-text ETD will only be available to AU affiliates through Scholarly Commons.
