Books at the Library

Below is a small selection of the books available about community development at the library.

Why use books when there are websites and journal articles available to you? For one thing, a book-length work on a topic of interest to you will probably go into more depth than you anticipate, and will show you how your specific topic is related to its discipline or disciplines, in some cases. Also, some books are collections of essays on a particular subject, which can often give you a wide range of views from top experts on a subject.

At Augusta University, we use GIL-Find to search for books. We have many books, both in print and electronically available.

Search the GIL-Find Catalog [has logo]

Find print and ebooks, other types of sources including DVDs, online videos, eJournals, print journals, and more found in the libraries (not journal articles)

Tip! When it launches into the full GIL-Find catalog, use the "Full Access Online" limiter on the side to retrieve materials available electronically.

Subject Headings

Subject Headings are the way librarians classify various materials into controlled, universal language. Because subject headings use a "controlled vocabulary," you do not have to use many different keywords trying to figure out what the author used. Librarians assign a common subject heading, even if authors use different vocabulary for the same topic.

Community development is a broad subject term in use for books in the catalog. Click the link below to view all materials in GIL-Find with this subject heading. You can then add additional terms or limits (such as date or location).

Community Development

While this is the most specific subject term for this concept, there may be others that also cover related topics, such as "City Planning" or "Social Services."

You can search for subject headings at http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects.html. Once you find an appropriate one, put it into the GIL-Find search bar and press search. You will see only results that have this subject heading, even if the keyword does not turn up this result.
