Career Services - Finding a Job: Using social media

In collaboration with the Augusta University Career Services, this guide helps students find resources on several topics relating to job searching.

Introduction

Social media sites connect people. Although the original intent of such sites like Facebook and Twitter was for communal interaction, these sites have increasingly become platforms for job searching and professional networking. One important reason which led to this was the significant increase in the use of social media sites by the general population over the past decade. Now, there are even social media sites that specialize in job hunting, such as LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is the world's largest professional networking site. You can promote your skills in a professional platform, network with professions in your field of interest, connect with recruiters, and apply for jobs.

Guidelines

  • Keep personal and professional separate.
  • Profile data, pictures, status updates, etc. should reflect who you are as a professional.
  • Treat your bio section as a cover letter.
  • Join groups that advertise job openings.
