Google Books

Search for books that have been digitized by Google.  If the book is out of copyright, or the publisher has given permission, you'll be able to see a preview of the book, and in some cases the entire text. If it's in the public domain, you're free to download a PDF copy.

Using the Catalog

To identify books in Reese Library, use GILFind.

  • Type in what you want to search for; remember that you can better control the parameters of your search if you use Advanced Search.
  • If current research is important for your project, change the sort from 'relevance' to 'date newest' so you see the most recently published material first.
  • You may see more than one subject heading assigned to a book. You can use this to revise your search strategy if you need to.
  • You may also try a keyword search (click new search, then keyword and fill in the search boxes with your terms.) To get the most out of keyword searching, remember:
    • Use * to truncate—example child* will pick up child, child’s, children.
    • When you find results you like, click on the title, then look at the subject headings to find ‘more like this.’
    • Use the pull-down box to search two or more words as a phrase.
    • Use one word or phrase per box to represent each concept you're searching.
  • When you find something you might want to use:
    • Pay attention to location, call number and status so you can find the item.
    • Electronic items have a link at the bottom of the record to access the content.
