Social Work Resources: Find Legislation

A brief introduction to resources in Reese Library, and available through our web site, for research in topics related to social work.

Why Legislatation?

Every day, new court cases are argued before judges at all levels of the justice system. Each year, Congress passes new laws or amends old ones. All of these can affect the services the social worker can offer and how those services can be offered. It is important to know how to find legal information in order to understand how they affect social work practice.

Congressional Session Chart

Since 1934, the first session of a Congress convenes on January 3 of odd-numbered years and adjourns on January 3 the following odd-numbered year. For ease of use, this table lists the closing date of each Congress as an even-numbered year.

Using Google Scholar for Case Law

This video from the Library of Congress shows how to use Google Scholar to find federal and state case law using legal citations and keywords.
