HIST 3001: South Africa vs. the American South: Web Resources

DISA is a freely accessible online scholarly resource focusing on the socio-political history of South Africa, particularly the struggle for freedom during the period from 1950 to the first democratic elections in 1994, providing a wealth of material on this fascinating period of the country’s history. Much time, creative thought and debate goes into the selection of the content, and participation and input from interested persons, scholars and institutions in South Africa and overseas is encouraged.

With the assistance of Aluka (aluka.org), a selection of 16 among the interviews done for the book were transcribed and prepared for presentation on the web. Each transcript was reviewed by the interviewee, and a short introduction prepared by one of the No Easy Victories editors. The first four interviews, with Bill Sutherland, George Houser, E. S. Reddy, and Charlene Mitchell, refer primarily to the period of the 1950s. The remaining 12 interviews range widely over the decades from the 1960s through the 1980s. South African History Online (SAHO) was established in 1998 and registered in June 2000 as a not for profit Section 21 organization. SAHO has over two decades become the largest and most comprehensive online website on South African and African history and culture.
