History of Faculty Author Collection

Robert B. Greenblatt M.D. Library

The Greenblatt Library of the Medical College of Georgia established the MCG Author Collection in 1979 as part of the Special Collections program. Books authored by MCG faculty members were transferred from the circulating collection to Special Collections and became non-circulating. The purpose of this Collection is to preserve the published monographs written or edited by members of the faculty as a legacy of the individual and the institution. While the name of the Collection has changed to reflect the institution, the purpose remains the same.

The Collection includes the following:

  • George W. Rains' Interesting Chemical Exercises in Qualitative Analysis for Ordinary Schools published in 1880.
  • Theodore E. Oertel's Medical Microscroscopy published in 1902.
  • Eugene E. Murphey's Observations on Bird Life os the Middle Savannah River Valley, 1890-1937 published in 1937.
  • J. Fred Denton's Georgia Birds: Pocket Check-list published in 1969.
  • Cecilia Mettler's History of Medicine which was published posthomously in 1947. Her husband, Fred A. Mettler, edited the book.
  • Several books by Fred A. Mettler including Neuroanatomy and Varieties Psychopathological Experience.
  • All five editions of Hervey M. Cleckley's Mask of Sanity.
  • 27 editions of Corbett Thigpen and Cleckley's The Three Faces of Eve published in fifteen languages including English.

Reese Library

From  1932, with the publication of William Carson’s "Savings and Employee Savings Plans in Philadelphia", the faculty of the Summerville Campus have contributed to the compilation and dissemination of knowledge.  Reese Library embraces, in the past, present and future, a commitment to adding and maintaining faculty works within its collection.  Past practice has located faculty publications in the general collection to benefit the students and the community.  Reese Library is pleased to embark on the creation of a non-circulating collection to preserve the scholarly capital of the University’s dedicated and distinguished faculty.

The following bibliography is hardly comprehensive.  Faculty and former faculty wishing to contribute to this collection are encouraged to donate copies of their works for inclusion in this collection.
