Welcome to the Pre-College SEEP Library Research Seminar

Course Syllabus

Course Goals:

  • To enrich student knowledge of health information resources.
  • To develop problem-solving skills for finding and evaluating health information.
  • To develop skills to assist in preparing college-level research papers.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will:

  • Describe the research process as it relates to scientific literature
  • Utilize search tools & techniques to conduct efficient and effective searches
  • Distinguish between plagiarism and the appropriate citation of others’ research / AI
  • Explain the importance of bibliographic accuracy and utilize APA 7 format & citation style

Grading:

Students will receive a final grade based on a standardized evaluation form. Primary criteria used to evaluate class performance include:

  • Pre- and post-tests
  • Active participation in class discussion
  • 2 weekly homework assignments
  • Final presentation

Final Presentation

You will prepare and deliver a 5-minute PowerPoint / slideshow presentation on an assigned genetic disease & recommend treatment option(s). Topics will be assigned & details provided during Session 2 (6/13).

Percentage of Effort

Expect to spend approximately five to ten percent of your overall SEEP effort on the library seminar.

Use our Microsoft Teams channel to upload your assignments or post questions and discussions with your classmates and instructors. This is where we meet each week as well.

Session 1: The Research Process

  • Assignment 1 – Due 6/11
    • "From Lab to Headlines: Tracing the Translation"
      • 1) Find a news story that reports on a medical study or health-related research. Include a link to the article (or paste the article at the bottom of your document). Summarize it in a few sentences. (Tell us the "who, what, when, where, & why").
      • 2) Use PubMed to find the study reported on in your health news article. Include the study's article citation in APA format. 
      • 3) Answer the following questions in a few sentences: 
        • Did the news article make it easy or difficult to find the actual study? Describe how you got to the full text of the study (not just the abstract/summary).
        • What kind of study was it? What questions were the researchers trying to answer and what were their results (briefly)?
        • Is the news report an accurate representation of the study? What did the news writer do well? What could be improved upon in their report?
      • 4) Submit your assignment to the Teams Channel under the Assignments tab by 11:59 PM on 6/11

Presentation Guidelines:

Prepare and deliver a 5 minute PowerPoint/slideshow presentation on an assigned genetic disease & recommended treatment(s).

What is it? (brief definition/background/history)

What causes it? (genetics/pathogenesis)

Body system affected (effects/pathophysiology)

Recommended treatment/s (possibly pharmacotherapy) & prognosis

You must use three sources, formatted in APA 7th ed. style, cited on your final slide. Start with the SEEP LibGuide for links to resources. Required source types:

1 textbook chapter/section

1 journal article

source of your choice – may include one credible website. Or you may choose another journal article or book section.
