Quick Search Tips

  • Use quotation marks to search for a phrase. For example, "emergent literacy".

  • Input keywords and phrases that represent different concepts in different search fields. For example, pre-schoolers in the first field and “emergent literacy” in the second will find articles that contain the keyword pre-schoolers and the key phrase emergent literacy.

  • Set search limits such as scholarly journals, full-text, or document type.

  • Sort results by date or relevance, especially if requested by your professor.

  • Look at suggested subjects to narrow your search.

  • Use truncation, for example, "strateg*" will find results with strategic, strategy, strategies, etc.

Search GALILEO

Find articles in databases - a "medium level" search

Why search within an individual or a set of databases rather than GALILEO?

As GALILEO covers a wide range of disciplines, searching within an individual, or a small set of subject-specialty databases can be more on target and efficient. It is worth trying GALILEO first, and then run a similar search in a subject database/set of databases.

Language Arts journal coverAre you not too keen on the database results you are finding in your searches?

For an even more targeted search, you can search within a particular e-journal.

For example, instead of searching Education Source database, where you will find articles from many Education journals, you can enter the Language Arts, search it, and you will only get results from that journal.

The below e-journals are recommended by your professor for this assignment. They are also great to browse for keeping abreast of literacy education research and practice:
