Culminating Experience: Research Project Guidelines

The Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Studies allows students to merge an area of emphasis with an area of support. To help make the connection between these two areas, students need to complete a research project on a topic that is related to coursework in their area of emphasis and area of support. Accordingly, students have freedom to pick from a long list of possible topics and research an area that will benefit their education and future careers.

To complete the assignment, students need to do the following:

  1. Identify three possible research topics from their coursework
  2. Discuss these three topics with the Director of Integrated Studies
  3. Select one topic for the research project
  4. Locate at least 15 credible, academic sources on the topic and develop a list in APA style
  5. Write a paper of 10 – 12 pages discussing the topic

The paper should include the following sections:

  1. Introduction: This section presents an overview of the topic, discusses its importance, and introduces the reader to the remaining parts of the paper.
  2. A review of the topic: This section presents the research on the topic.
  3. Integrating the topic: In this section, students need to discuss how the topic can be researched by examining it from an integrated studies perspective. Students should discuss how their coursework helps them better explain and research the topic.
  • The paper should be formatted using APA* style guidelines, including a cover page and reference list.
  • The paper needs to be 10 – 12 pages, double spaced using a standard 12-point font.

*Note: With permission, a student may use an alternate citation style that is appropriate for their areas of study. The student should consult with Dr. Hayward in advance.
