Reese Library Special Collections: Colonial Georgia: Manuscript materials

 

The following is a list of manuscript collections held by Reese Library Special Collections, which are related to the history of colonial Georgia. These unpublished collections include many primary source materials. Primary sources are generally original documents created at the time being studied, whereas secondary sources (like books), were written later, and reflect upon a given time period or event.                                                                                                                                                                                              

 

ARCHS 072: George Galphin papers, 1709-1850

This collection is comprised of materials acquired during the preparation of a George Galphin issue of Richmond County History (vol 13, 1981), consisting of xerox copies of original records and secondary sources, news clippings, photos, correspondence concerning George Galphin, a colonial trader of Silver Bluff, S.C. and Galphintown (Quuensborough), Ga.

MSS 006: Miscellaneous legal papers, 1732-1922

Collection includes: slave bills of sale, Georgia land deeds; including Cherokee,  Wilkes, Richmond, Columbia, Greene, Wilkinson, Jefferson, Burke, Screven, Washington, and Early Counties, and cities Augusta and Savannah, South Carolina land deeds; including Edgefield, Granville, Effingham, Barnwell, and Aiken Counties and Beech Island and Newberry District, Georgia Legal Papers, South Carolina Legal Papers, and Confederate and Military Papers.

MSS 105: Burke County legal records, 1768-1848

The majority of the documents are indentures recording sales or transfers of land in Burke County, Georgia.

 

MSS 158: "Colonial Records: the Georgia  Perspective" conference presentation

Materials which represent Georgia's experience in the collection and description of Colonial records. it was prepared for presentation at the 1990 Southeast Archives and Records Conference held in Savannah on May 3, 1990, to give possible alternatives for future acquisitions of colonial materials.

 

MSS 289: Heard Robertson research collection, 1965-1990

Research notes and photocopies relating to Mr. Robertson’s interest in Georgia Loyalists and the Colonial and Revolutionary history of the Georgia back country.

 

MSS 395: Burke County legal records & correspondence

This collection is comprised of miscellaneous legal records and correspondence relating to individuals and families in Burke County, Georgia. The majority of documents relate to the buying and selling of real estate, and includes deeds, trust deeds,  and plot maps describing property lines. Also included are indentures, and letters related to these legal arrangements.
