Sociology of Golf: Choose a Topic

Sociology of Golf Research Guide

Focusing Your Research Topic

Your instructions will determine how far you need to narrow down (or even broaden) your chosen topic. You may need to narrow down your scope so that you don't ramble or take on more work than you can possibly do or than the assignment requires. You might need to broaden your scope if you are not finding enough research to support your paper.

How do you know if your topic is too large or too small? Read on.

My topic is too big.

Your challenge should be humanly possible for you to study in the time allotted for your assignment. If your challenge would take yours and many others' life work to fully address, then you should probably narrow it down. One example of such a challenge  would be golf and race, class, and gender. This is an enormous challenge. But if you narrow it down from golf and race, class, and gender to the Williams Sisters and tennis roles you will have a much more manageable challenge to address.

My topic is too small. (But is it?)
Sometimes your topic may be hard to research. This may happen if your challenge is very specific, e.g. First-generation members of Augusta National. If that is the case, you may need to  pull on research that addresses different pieces of your topic. You may do better looking for social class in elite sports and separately searching for golf club membership. If you're still having trouble, you may want to broaden your topic.
