Introduction to the Library-Basic Skills: Finding books

Master these library skills to feel more confident navigating the library and looking for materials

Chapter One

As college students you need to be able to find books and materials in your library,  Since almost everyone needs to take an English class, lets talk about Jim a fellow East Georgia College student who is taking an English composition class.

Professor Blount suggests that Jim read the epic poem Beowulf.  He thinks Jim will find the story of Beowulf interesting and learn something about poetry. Professor Blount tells Jim he can find this book in the library.  What is Jim going to do?

Where to start?

Professor Blount has asked Jim to find a "known item" Jim is looking for a particular book that has a title and/or an author. There are two ways that Jim can find this:

1.Go to Reese Library and use the catalog computer station by either the one by the circulation desk or the one by the third floor elevator doors. As another option,  use any computer with internet access on it.  Go to the Augusta University University Libraries Click on Reese Library

2. Click on catalog next to the search box and pull down Title in the menu. Type in the title of the work. Jim  typed in Beowulf and this record appeared..

Jim started reading Beowulf and found he didn't like it.  Professor Blount suggested Jim try one of the epic poems by Homer. Jim repeated step 1. to find the catalog.  Then he chose author from the pull down menu and typed in Homer.  These are the results he got.
