Google Books

Search for books that have been digitized by Google.  If the book is out of copyright, or the publisher has given permission, you'll be able to see a preview of the book, and in some cases the entire text. If it's in the public domain, you're free to download a PDF copy.

Search Tips

To identify books in Reese Library use GIL-Find.

  • When you open the catalog, use the drop-down menu to choose the 'subject' button, then enter the author's name last name, first name (as in Gandhi, Mohandas)  to find works about an author's life (biographies) or studies of his/her writings (criticism).
  • You may see more than one heading. A good one to look for is 'author's name--criticism and interpretation.' Click on the headings to see the books available under that heading.
  • You may also try a keyword search (click new search, then keyword and fill in the search boxes with your terms.) To get the most out of keyword searching, remember:
    • use one word or phrase per box to represent each concept you're searching.
    • Use the pull-down box to search two or more words as a phrase.
    • When you find results you like, click on the title, then look at the subject headings to find ‘more like this.’
    • Use * to truncate—example child* will pick up child, child’s, children.
  • When you find something you might want to use:
  • Pay attention to location, call number and status so you can find the item..
  • Electronic items have a link at the bottom of the record to access the content.

If you've found a book or book chapter reference in a database, Use GIL-Find to find out if Augusta University has that book.

Finding Books

  • Use a variety of library catalogs the University Libraries' GIL, the Library of Congress, and WorldCat (online access) are recommended.  If you know of other universities that have extensive holdings in Southern history, for example Duke University, check those out too, For links to other catalogs go to the tab Additional Online Resources
  • Keywords are not always your friends.  Its fine to start with keywords but, once you find a book you are interested in, note down what subject headings it is filed under.  Searching here may well improve your results.
  • If your keywords aren't working use Library of Congress subject headings click here http://authorities.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First
  • INTERLIBRARY LOAN IS YOUR FRIEND!!! Especially in Georgia.  No library can hold it all.  Use GIL-Express and Illiad and plan for a three day delivery period.  If you are having trouble putting requests in, the librarians will help you.  We'll even walk you through the process.

Your ILLiad Account

If a book is not available in the GIL Universal Catalog, you can request it from a non-University System of Georgia library for free using Illiad. Logon to your ILLiad account (new users must create their account) to place requests. Read more about Illiad requests here.
Note:  If you plan to use ILLiad, please be sure and start your research early.  Depending on where we need to request your materials from, it could take anywhere from 10 - 14 days or longer to receive them.
