ENGL1101: Present your Argument and Counter Arguments

Write a First Draft of your Argument

As is the case with any piece of writing, you should take your argumentative essay through multiple drafts. When writing and revising your drafts, make sure you:

  • provide ample evidence, presented logically and fairly
  • deal with the opposing point of view
  • pay particular attention to the organization of your essay. Make sure its structure suits your topic and audience
  • address and correct any fallacies of logic
  • include proper transitions to allow your reader to follow your argument

Counter Arguments

Counter arguments recognize perspectives that do not align with your argument but also provide an opportunity to solidify your position. This is done by acknowledging the opposing argument and then revealing why your position is the most logical.

There are two steps to acknowledging a counter argument:

1. Respectfully acknowledge the evidence or standpoint that differs from your own.

2. Refute the stance of the opposing argument, typically highlighted by key words such as "although" or "however." Make sure you explain to the reader why your position is the correct position and your evidence outweighs the counter argument's evidence.
